World Environment Day: agritech as a strategic driver for a sustainable future

  • World Environment Day is a collective call to action: we all share the responsibility of protecting our planet. The environmental impact of our choices can no longer be ignored.
  • Roberto Mancini, CEO of Diagram Group:The role of agritech — technological innovation applied to agriculture — is increasingly emerging as a key tool in addressing global environmental challenges. Halting environmental degradation and regenerating ecosystems is no longer optional; it is an absolute priority.

Jolanda di Savoia, 5 June 2025 “World Environment Day is once again an opportunity to draw attention to the urgent need to protect our planet and promote sustainable practices. The role of agritech, the technological innovation applied to agriculture, as a fundamental tool to address global environmental challenges emerges strongly”. Roberto Mancini, CEO of Diagram Group, Italy’s and Europe’s leading agritech provider of precision farming services, technological solutions and professional software applications for the agricultural sector, spoke to recall the importance of technology in safeguarding biodiversity, saving resources and protecting the Environment.

“It is urgent,” Mancini continues, “to halt environmental degradation and restore balance to ecosystems. In this context, agriculture — while being a fundamental pillar of food security — is also one of the main sources of environmental pressure. This is precisely where agritech emerges as a strategic lever to reconcile productivity with sustainability

“World Environment Day reminds us that we all share the responsibility of caring for our planet. The ecological footprint of our activities can no longer be ignored. Agritech is an essential tool — it enables us to measure environmental impact, ensure global food security, and at the same time reduce the pressure agriculture places on ecosystems,” Mancini adds.

Diagram Group develops advanced technological solutions ranging from precision agriculture — based on GPS and sensor systems — to crop monitoring via satellite data and the use of artificial intelligence to optimise practices such as irrigation and fertilisation. These innovations empower farmers to make more informed decisions, reducing the waste of vital resources such as water, fertilisers, and pesticides, while enhancing the overall sustainability of agricultural production.

The Group also provides digital solutions for full traceability along the agri-food supply chain — from field to shelf — through the integration of QR codes and advanced information systems.

“Before the advent of agritech technologies, irrigation was often carried out empirically, resulting in significant water waste. Today, thanks to soil moisture sensors and advanced data analytics, farms can intervene only when and where it’s truly necessary.

This approach not only reduces costs but also marks a major step forward in environmental sustainability,” explains Mancini.

Optimising land use is another critical area. Digital technologies applied to agriculture make it possible to fight erosion, improve soil fertility, and promote conservation practices — all contributing to biodiversity protection and climate change mitigation. Healthy soils are also capable of storing more carbon, playing a vital role in maintaining global environmental balance.

“Technological innovation,” Mancini continues, “is a strategic lever to accelerate the ecological transition of the agricultural sector. This is why we continue to invest in research and development — but above all, in training farmers, so they can access and benefit from advanced tools with ease. We must recognise that sustainability is not a cost, but an investment in our future. “This is the path we are resolutely committed to following.”
