Digital innovation, especially in agriculture, plays a crucial role in protecting and enhancing so-called “fragile areas”—territories not only marginal but with specific vulnerabilities and unique resources. Digitalization, public-private partnerships, and the data economy are pivotal, with agritech seen as essential for resource management. These are the central themes of the research report The Value of Digital Transformation for the Socioeconomic Recovery of Fragile Areas, conducted by Fondazione Magna Carta with Lutech, Assomediatech, and contributions from Diagram Group.

The presentation, held this afternoon in the Sala della Regione at Palazzo dei Capitani in Ascoli Piceno, featured Pier Luigi Romiti, Diagram’s Marketing and Communications Director.

Tailor-made solutions for every need. “As the need for technological tools to manage agriculture and land increases, Diagram provides both farmers and public bodies with customized solutions,” said Romiti. “We collect data via satellites, drones, weather stations, and agronomists, offering personalized decision-making support on irrigation, pesticide treatments, and more. We also help public bodies map their territory and streamline bureaucracy. Diagram has mapped the entire national territory and can provide erosion maps, organic carbon storage, and soil composition at the click of a button for any public agency or supply chain needing to monitor agricultural practices.”

Marginal areas: custodians of tradition and biodiversity. Digitalization can turn vulnerability into opportunity, especially in Italy’s mountainous and rural zones. 41.6% of Italy is hilly, 35.2% mountainous, with 22.7% of the population living in peripheral areas, often facing landslide risks, demographic decline, and economic marginalization—but rich in culture, biodiversity, and hidden treasures like small museums and local culinary heritage.

Digitalization and agritech for regional revitalization. “Digital agriculture becomes a key pillar for sustainable regional revitalization,” Romiti added. He emphasized the importance of community pacts to promote public-private partnerships, agritech projects in seismic areas, and training. “We’re proud to work with Fondazione Magna Carta, which aims to train 10,000 digital managers by 2030 through hubs in rural schools,” Romiti concluded.

The company employs around 1,000 people, including both staff and collaborators, across multiple locations in Italy and the United Kingdom.
